Taking on new work

Michael BolusSoftware developerBrighton

Your business already runs on software. I make it the software you actually wanted, bit by bit, without starting again. One person looks after all of it: your servers and cloud, the software, the integrations, the reports, the mobile app and the alerts on your phone.

01 / Verify me

Check me before you trust me.

Anyone can build a convincing website. These are the things that are hard to fake. Before you trust anyone with your business, check. It is all right here, and it takes two minutes.

02 / Why me

“It works” tells you nothing.

Everyone says it now. Ask for an app and you will get one that works. What you will never see is what is underneath: three hundred lines doing the job of thirty, a database shaped around the first idea instead of around your business, reports that get slower every month as your data grows.

None of it shows on day one. It shows when you add a feature, take on more customers, or need your numbers out, and by then it is built into everything.

Software is like the wiring in a house. It all works, until you add a room.

I read code the way a surveyor reads a building. I design the database around how your business actually runs, write only as much code as the job needs, and build it so the next feature is cheap, not a rewrite. You may never see the difference. You will feel it every year after.

What you are told What I check
  1. It works Is it built the right shape for your business?
  2. It's finished Can it grow without a rewrite?
  3. It's fast Will it still be fast with ten times the data?
  4. The report runs Are the numbers right?

Already have something that “works”? Send it to me and I will tell you honestly what is underneath.

03 / Modernise

Keep what works. Fix what doesn't.

You have spent years, and a lot of money, getting your system to where it is. Your team lives in it every day. It is just not where you want it to be, and everyone has learned to live with that.

You do not have to throw it away and start the learning curve again. I take what is already there and modernise it bit by bit, so it ends up fitting the way you work, without a big-bang rewrite and without a screen your team has never seen before.

One part at a time. Your data stays where it is, and everything else keeps running.
  1. 01

    Your team keeps working.

Changes arrive a piece at a time, in screens that feel familiar. Nobody starts from scratch.

  2. 02

    Your data stays put.

No big migration weekend. I work with the data you already have, and anything underneath that needs fixing, even a system running on spreadsheets, is fixed without your team noticing a thing.

  3. 03

    You see progress every month.

Each step goes live on its own, so you are not waiting a year for anything to get better.

  4. 04

You can stop at any point.

Every step leaves you with a working system, never half of a rewrite.

Twenty years of doing exactly this, for businesses from one person to multi-site. The detail is on LinkedIn , and I am happy to walk you through it on a call.

Bespoke vs off the shelf

Off the shelf, or built for you?

Most off-the-shelf business software was written years ago, on technology that has since been retired. It has been patched and modified ever since to keep it running. You pay per user, every year. Every change you need costs a fortune, if the vendor will make it at all. And the business ends up bending its processes to fit the software.

It can be brought up to date. I have done it again and again. But most vendors never will: it costs too much for a company their size, the technology moves faster than they can hire for, and the know-how is rarely in-house. I work for businesses, not for a product of my own, so keeping up to date is my job.

Bespoke software works the other way round. It fits the way you already work, it runs on current technology, you own it, and it changes when your business does.

Sometimes off the shelf is the right answer, and if it is, I will tell you. For most growing businesses, it is not.

Off the shelf

  • Written years ago, on retired technology
  • Patched and modified to keep it running
  • You pay per user, every year
  • Changes cost a fortune, if the vendor will make them at all
  • Your business bends to fit the software

Built for you

  • Fits the way you already work
  • Runs on current technology
  • You own it
  • Changes when your business does

04 / Integrations

All your systems. One place.

Most businesses run on five or six systems that do not talk to each other, so someone copies the same orders, stock and customers between them by hand.

I connect them, so the data flows on its own and you manage everything from one place. Then I automate the repetitive work: the re-keying, the exports, the Monday-morning spreadsheet.

One place Orders · Stock · Customers · Accounts
  • Shopify
  • WooCommerce
  • Magento
  • FreeAgent
  • Sage
  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Public health data
  • Your existing system

05 / Experience

I have built the systems businesses run on.

Full ERP, end to end. These are the core of it, not the limit: if your business runs on it, I can build it, connect it or fix it.

The journey

One person, the whole journey. No surprises.

  1. 01

    Understand

I learn how your business actually works, before anything is drawn or built.

  2. 02

    Design

You get an interactive design you can click through. You see exactly what you are getting, and we agree it before I start.

  3. 03

    Architecture

The database and structure are shaped around your business and built to grow.

  4. 04

    Build

Desktop, web and mobile, written to be lean, fast and easy to change.

  5. 05

    Infrastructure

Servers, networking and cloud set up properly.

  6. 06

    Deploy and install

On your devices, your network and your cloud.

  7. 07

    Support

I stay. The person who built it is the person who fixes it.

You get on with running your business. I look after the software it runs on.

06 / How I work

How I work.

  1. 01

    You email me.

I reply within one working day.

  2. 02

    We talk it through.

A call, no charge, no pitch.

  3. 03

    Flexible, not fixed.

Requirements change once people see their software, so we work in short stages. You see progress at every one and can change direction without starting a fight over a contract.

  4. 04

    You own everything.

Code, accounts, passwords. Nothing is held hostage.

AI, used properly

A calculator does not make you an accountant.

AI can write code in seconds. It cannot tell you when that code is wrong, and neither can anyone who cannot read it.

I use AI every day for the routine work: structure and bulk code, never the full picture. Then AI is done, and I finish it by hand, reshaping every part until it fits your business today and what it will need next. You get the speed without the risk.

Ask anyone who builds with AI My answer
  1. Can you explain every line? Yes. I read and check every line before it ships.
  2. Who finishes the work, you or the AI? I do, by hand. AI drafts; it never decides.
  3. What happens when it breaks? I fix it. I built it, so I know exactly where to look.
  4. Will it cope as we grow? Yes. It is built for what you will need next, not just today.
  5. Where does our data go? Nowhere. Your real data never goes into an AI tool.

Services

What I take on.

Ask me about any of these and I will tell you how I would build it, and what I would leave out.

07 / About

A real person, not an agency.

I'm Michael. I started on the infrastructure side: networks, servers, and the Excel and VBA workbooks businesses ran on, backed by a BA in Business, specialising in Accounting, from Sohag University. That led me to C# and .NET, and I have been building with it for twenty years since.

I also run Adur Aviation Ltd. It is why my name is on the Companies House register, and it means I know what it is like to be the customer waiting on a supplier.

I like systems that are simple and fast. I would rather tell you what to leave out than sell you more.

08 / Contact

Tell me what is broken,
or what you want built.

A few lines is enough. Tell me what you have now and what you wish it did. I read and answer every email myself, and I reply within one working day.
